The Basics of Home Care

To ensure your oral health stays in tiptop shape, we have included some information for you to read through and consider. At the office of Bradley C. Jones, DDS, we strive to give excellent dental care in Napa, California, and hope you will trust us with your family.

Preventing dental disease and decay is our goal for our patients and therefore, brushing twice daily is vital to good oral health. Brushing removes plaque, a sticky substance that can form on your teeth, resulting in cavities, as well as gum disease.

Flossing goes hand-in-hand with brushing and contributes to a healthy smile. There are a number of different types of floss to choose from, including:

  • Waxed or unwaxed
  • Regular
  • Extra fine
  • Ribbon
  • Flavored
  • Thick
  • Thin

Flossing daily helps prevents gum disease from forming. Gingivitis, the technical name, is a very common dental problem; you may have noticed swelling, bleeding gums when you brush, or red gums, which are the tell-tale signs of the disease. A good routine of brushing and flossing, along with a rinse, can help reverse the condition or stave off worsening of the disease.

There is good evidence to suggest using fluoride can decrease the incidents of cavities by strengthening and protecting your teeth from acid. When you choose a fluoride toothpaste, it is best to find one that has the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance label, to ensure safety and effectiveness.

There are a variety of sources for fluoride, including: water, dentist applications, toothpaste, mouthwash, gels, and dietary supplements.

The Basics of Professional Care

A good dental routine includes visiting the dentist and getting a professional cleaning and checkup to ensure your oral health is good and if treatment is needed, to design a plant to get the dental care you need. You will also have X-rays taken of your mouth and have an examination by the dentist, who will usually check for oral cancer, gum disease, or any abnormalities. The dentist will also check your jaw and neck for a condition called temporomandibular joint syndrome or TMJ.

Sports Protection: Athletic Mouth Guards

If you or your family member engage in sports, particularly contact sports, our dentist may recommend wearing a mouth guard to protect your teeth from injury. The dentist can customize a mouth guard so it fits you perfectly, or may suggest a store-bought alternative.

Orthodontics or Braces

If you need braces or orthodontic care to help align your teeth or that of a child, a dentist or orthodontist can consult with you. Braces can improve your smile and your confidence, as well as your dental health and chewing capabilities.

There are several types of braces, such as traditional metal braces, clear aligners, and removable braces that are worn for certain hours of the day.

Smokeless Tobacco

E-cigarettes or smokeless tobacco can still cause gum disease and tooth loss, oral cancer, and addiction. Quitting will benefit not just your oral health but your whole health.

Oral Piercing

A popular form of expression, oral piercing can cause dental problems, such as damage to dental fillings. It can also cause scar tissue, infection, pain, and swelling, as well as excessive drooling and difficulty with talking and eating.
